We're going to be phasing out Patreon and Ko-fi for our own in house donation system starting from now. If you use/donate via one of these services please cancel donations there. We lose roughly $20 each month to them in fee's and that's almost half the costs of our servers each month. Using our in house system we'll save more and can do more site upgrades as needed and new features.
Would it be possible for users to follow our social media accounts too please? We're trying to gain more followers so we can get news out easier. While we've not been as active in the past we'll be using them more now, Including Instagram as hermesconrad made us.
We're also going to be removing some on site ranks as...
You may login tonight and notice the site is faster. That's because we finally ditched the dreaded 100mbit port for a 1gbit port and in the process gained 2 extra cpu cores and a larger SSD for only $5 more wew. Bonuses include not costing $120/month .
Although not publicly announced here, in September 2020 OG registered to become a museum allowing us to archive and do museum activities including library based actions. This is just incase we open a building for people to read game magazines/documents etc. This wouldn't be any time soon and is purely based on funding options.
Being a company means we now have a proper business bank account, plus a proper business paypal.
The goals of our company/museum is simple, to preserve video game history for the future and to allow researchers access upon request. I personally will never profit from this and everything I own is under OG/VGPM ownership unless anything ever happens in which case anything I own would be returned. I make no...
We research the development of the games and how they have evolved over time. With this in mind we research using any sources necessary. We are on the lookout for any prototypes, press kits, unreleased/obscure demo builds and magazines, etc! If anyone has something in their collection, feel free to post in one of the sub-forums! We have one for each Spyro game in the trilogy.
Originally established on Discord in July 2020, we are looking to branch out our community and increase the accessbility by allowing communication here, exclusively on ObscureGamers. We know that there are those who do not use Discord as a preferred platform of discussion, and we wish to preserve all the united efforts of researching these games...
Awhile back we mentioned XenForo 2.2 is coming which has many changes. We put out warnings some older features would break and sadly in this case the OG 2020 themes did break due to the new features.
We'll be enabling legacy themes over the coming few days which will look and feel like the old ones but won't be the same fully. They'll just be there for legacy reasons and for those that run older hardware.
Currently only light themes are live but there's also many bonus features lurking such as our new web app for android.
You may spot bugs and if you do please report here asap, we'd need a screenshot, device name/browser and version used to help speed things up.
I won't bore you more here so will get back to finising up the dark themes.
EDIT: Dark theme semi sorted, and people forget each year but...
Even though my day to day role here in OG is limited it hasn't stopped us staff from working on new ways to expand behind the scenes.
Recently we launched the much demanded resources center, we're working on a new design for the upcoming XenForo 2.2 release which adds a bunch of mobile related features users will enjoy.
But what about older projects? Well those have been taken down awhile now but were never to stay this way. The main issue with these was the fact they were on random domains or subdomains, this was just a growing expense so we decided to make a true archive under one domain. This includes the old prototopia list which after much debate was turned into a wiki.
With this said, it's time to drive more user input which is why we're now releasing early sneak peaks. The Wiki will be request access only and you will need to have an account here on OG to get access. We'll then create an account with a strong secure...
while we continue to expand Obscure Gamers and reach more people, Patreon has become a popular way for you to support us in our ever reaching quest for preservation. While patreon has been an ideal platform up until this point, due to the recent changes regarding fees on our end, we are now having to pay a significant ammount of money to Patreon in order to use the service. We have found an alternative site that will allow you to continue to support us while still receiving the same great rewards.
Our question to you is this; Would you be happy to switch from Patreon to another service (Ko-Fi) in order to continue to support us, allowing more of your money to go towards our service?
Obscure Gamers is a Video Game Preservation group founded in 2017. We actively work to preserve long lost video game history & hardware for educational research and historical purposes. Our long term goal is to work with Video Game Developers in preserving this important history from being lost.
