Somehow I missed this, but during GDC this year a brief glimpse of prototype dual shock 4 controllers were shown during the Astro Bit Rescue presentation (starts at 3:28)

Namely the one with the buttons in place of where the analog sticks would be, but I suppose they've gotta test this stuff or innovation wouldn't be a thing.

Lots of creativity in the different designs. Playing around with spaces and hand placement/ergonomics vs age-old muscle memory. Can see N's touchscreen/portability played a small part of the design process as well. Not sure how well that would've turned out if that was the final product.

Unfortunately, the final DS4 (imo) is just a huge step back in controller design, so it's nice to see how much they played around with different ideas before committing.
