DS Nintendo DS Firmware Information?

Hello!

I just picked up an original Nintendo DS (Japanese launch V1 too, lucky me )

I noticed there's no definite resource for differences between each NDS firmware, there's only information on how to check a firmware. Is there some place or maybe someone can provide some information on what each firmware?

There's like 7 versions of the firmware, as per a post I found out gbatemp:

Versions
v1: Pictochat freezes
v2: two greyish blue screens
v3: two dark green screens
v4: two golden yellow screens
v5: two magenta screens
v6: two dark blue screens
v7: DS system does not crash

I assume anything v5 or above is for NDS Lite which provides multiple brightnesses, so perhaps just additional hardware support (?)

Also, any info on why its possible to flash a by shorting pins, seems a bit strange XD
