Obscure Gamers 2024 Update

The ObscureGamers forum is making a comeback! After multiple requests, we've decided to cave in and are currently testing functionality to see how it goes.

It's been nearly two years since the initial closure, so we heavily encourage you to change your account credentials to something more secure that isn't used elsewhere. Multi-factor authentication is highly recommended.

Along with a minor facelift, some previous features have been removed, with some new ones added.

Multi-factor authentication is now available and can be configured from the following page.

Enjoy taking a look at our past!
This is a short testing period before we temporarily close the website again for further preparation. In addition, we're looking to recruit new staff for our community. Feel free to reach out and share your thoughts with us.

While I won't be retaining a role here for long, MC asked me to help jump start things for the staff as he doesn't know the software.

Here's a list of known bugs I've spotted:

1, Email server needs sorting, password resets won't work due to this. Please post on OG's discord and the staff will DM a temp password upon proof of account ownership.

2, Registration is disabled while staff are conducting tests.

3, The theme UI bugs out on Firefox. Not sure if it happens on Chrome, Happens on user hover and jumps to the bottom of the page.

Awesome. I think forums work much better for a site like this. I think you need go merge most of the sections together though! Everything is too spread out. It fragments everything and leads to stagnation. Merge most of the sections together. Split out in the future if you have the problem of too much happening in the one section, but don't start there. There should probably be like, 6 sections at the most IMO. You don't need three separate news sections and a dedicated place to just talk about 3DO hardware. Trim that right down.

I would suggest having only these forums:
  • Site news & feedback
  • Rare & obscure gaming
  • Dev, hacking, & reverse engineering
  • General discussion
  • Marketplace
That's it. Discussions can happen under these areas. See where things are 12 months from now and review. Assemblergames was too fragmented and many areas were stagnant, and I think mirroring that structure was a mistake. Some things like the "introduce yourself" forum should be a single sticky thread in one forum. The marketplace can have people selling, price checking, and requesting together. People can bump if they need to. I've been using forums since 1999 and dividing too much without the activity to back it up is how forums die.

It seems like the marketplace was changed to require 10 posts to view/post, is that something that will stay?
Also, the website seems fine on firefox now at least. User hover doesn't seem to do anything on firefox or edge.

Good to hear, great to have this website back up and running! Thanks guys.

Just here to offer support. I'm all for consolidating the forums though. I'll get lost with too much to read.

Good to be back! New design looks nice with the airy space at the top!
Hope we can make a more sustainable operation than last time. Did we ever check if there's an organization or fund that support small scale initiatives like this? It will likely come with guidelines etc, but who knows?

User hover seems to be working fine on firefox for me, other than that, welcome back everyone

Welcome back OG forums! All old timers return to your posts... :ROFLMAO:
