A few years ago a former member here made a tool to decrypt PlayStation 3 hard drives, with them gone we feel it's best to release it so others can decrypt PS3 HDD images.

The old public tools take a very long time, but this one runs at the full hard drive speed. It took me about 5 hours to decrypt a 400GB 1000A image the other year and I'm sure it'll be faster on SSD's etc.

To decrypt an image the command is: hdd_decrypt image.img eid_root_key decrypted.img the direct hdd function has never been tested mind you so may not work.

This tool works perfectly on Windows 10. It crashes immediately on 7, at least for me, so if anyone else is running 7 on the system they use for data recovery, try it on 10 instead.

Haven't tried it, but awesome release! So it looks like you just need the hard drive as well as the console specific eid_root_key to decrypt this? Would just like to make that clear before anyone gets too excited. Unfortunately many people I've run into who want to decrypt a broken console's HDD don't know anything about jailbreaking, so they won't have their eid_root_key backed up anywhere.

well, I have decrypted an HDD dump (.img format) with that consoles eid_root_key so this answers your question probably.
Oh and i used R-studio to explore that dump later

I just patched the tool to work with Arcade (system357/369) HDDs

Make sure to use the supplied eid_root_key file.
thank you,

The version of hdd_decrypt.exe extracted from the RAR archive downloaded when clicking on the Download button at the top of this page does not match the MD5 hash given in the first post. Downloading hdd_decrypt.exe from the mega.nz link given in the first post does result in a matching MD5 hash check. What's up with the RAR'd file?

Saw it originally on this web page which has no mega.nz link to download the file.
Only has the MD5 hash which does not match what you download and extract from the RAR archive.

The first post in this thread adds the link to download the hdd_decrypt.exe file which does have a matching MD5 hash.

Edit: I see the diffs. The RAR'd version states:

PS3 HDD Decrypter v1.0 by Emilis
and later
This is a private tool! DO NOT SHARE IT!

MD5: C10B5AC8948583292D2FBAD35691F235

while the mega.nz downloaded exe file says:

PS3 HDD Decrypter v1.0 by Anon
and later
This is a public tool! ObscureGamers.com

along with a few other character diffs for string terminators.

MD5: EBD1CC490C3FDC08134BA2176F4CD225

The RAR'd exe must be the original file.

Hello there, I'm a bit confused with the instructions on this topic. I have an HDD from a dead PS3 and I want to decrypt it. Should I use the .rar version, or the mega link version?

And also my PS3 was never jailbroken. Do I need the EID Root Key for this to work? Is there any workaround?

Thanks,

Tezz

Is there a chance for the source code to be released on github or any other side? I would be interested in customizing some stuff in the tool.

I have an hdd I need to decrypt but I don't have the eid root key, so I'm screwed. Has anyone done research on how eid root keys are generated? like a specific seed or anything like that?
