SMS Sega Sports Pad Issues

Hi all! I have a Sega Sports Pad trackball controller that doesn't seem to be working correctly. It only seems to scroll up and right. Upon taking it apart, I noticed that the ball doesn't make contact with the metal rods when moving down and left. Moving the rods with my fingers allows it to work perfectly. I also noticed that the ball is sitting on a hexagonal hole with nothing else holding it in place. Is this normal?

Anyone know of a way to fix this? Many thanks in advance!

Apologies for the month late reply, I've been busy with a lot of stuff and I wasn't able to get back around to messing with this until today.

Here are the pics I took. There seems to be some broken plastic but I didn't find anything rattling around inside.
