In spite of all the re-releases and reproduction copies too! There seems to be a lot more people with a much higher level of disposable income than ever before.

i wonder if this price is because people play it on twitch? I mean CT is a epic game, but that price is insame for a copy.
I remember that price you can get a factory sealed one some months ago..

My guess is many YouTube content creators creating lots of hype and awareness by covering the same popular titles over and over. I remember the MSRP for it was insane even when Final Fantasy Chronicles was out so I just borrowed it from a neighbor and showed my support by buying a PlayStation copy.

It is pretty unfortunate but common. Currently prices for GameBoy games and consoles are growing quite high for even common yet popular games like Pokemon, and especially for certain models of the GameBoy like the Advance SP with the 101 backlit screens. The same people who played the games as a child tend to come back in adulthood once they have stable income, and revisit their old games, and buy games they never had the chance to play as a kid with limited money. Rarer games can be incredibly expensive, as well as rarer handheld variations.

Used and not even particularly good condition copies of Trip World for the gameboy easily go for $200-300. One person is trying to sell a boxed copy for $1000, and copies of games like Shantae notoriously also go for crazy prices.

It is sad to see games go for these prices and no longer be accessible to your average gamer who might have otherwise quite enjoyed these titles.

because you can have it graded and re-sell it for 10 times as much.

But can you actually sell it? I've seen lots of that "graded" shit listed at crack-smoking prices, and and it just sits there for years. Sure, you might occasionally see some absurdly priced piece of crap sell - but that doesn't tell you anything about the market size at that price, it might only consist of a single individual.

Prices of SNES stuff have been going up progressively for years. The pandemic has had the effect of raising the prices of almost all game stuff, as well as most other types of collectables too, probably. I'm lucky that I got most of the SNES games I wanted before the prices started to become stupid. I think about a deal I got once, that didn't seem like a big deal at the time, but in retrospect it seems like a ridiculously good deal: some time in the early 2000s, I got this SNES bundle from a yard sale that included the system, all of the cables, 2 controllers, and like 10 super desirable games - for $20 total. For perspective, just one of those games was Kirby's Dream Land 3, and it looks like that game is going for over $100 now. The other games were similarly very popular ones like Super Metroid and a Link to the Past. I got into collecting at exactly the right time I think - before it was cool, back when everyone was more interested in the newest games and the idea of "retro" game collecting wasn't really a thing yet. I feel bad for anyone who wants to get into this now who isn't rich.

One thing I have learned about collecting that's still useful even now, is that when you have an opportunity to get something you want for really cheap, you should definitely get it. Prices of a lot of things have gone up, but you can still find good deals on some things if you look hard enough. That's a big part of how I've built my collection - finding deals wherever I can, and over the years I've built up a pretty awesome collection. I also recommend going to places like thrift stores and yard sales.

I remember good condition CT copies going from $300 to $500+ when I dabbled in SNES around 2015-16, so $1000 doesn't shock me.
The prices for newer generations like N64, PS1, PS2, GC, or graded used copies are what truly shows the current lunacy imo.
Print runs, availability, WATA, influencers, rich people, covid - it's a get rich quick supernova!

Prices for absolutely everything are up during the pandemic also because it's become hip to iNvEsT!
Collectibles markets have just been affected by and now become an extension of the stock/crypto investing trend.
