@Awbacon Say, do you think that the Hyper Neo-Geo 64 would have done a bit better if SNK had released it as a console only and not as an arcade system board?
doubtful. It was a mess of a system. Every function is broken down to its own ASIC. It would have cost a fortune to produce (even if it was cd based, which was the plan) and even in 97 it wouldn’t have been much more impressive than what was currently available.
In arcades it released mid way into 97. Considering DC released in fall of 98 there would be almost zero head start to get a install base.
plus apparently is was insanely hard to program for. 2D and 3D are on their own chips, and separate 2D and 3D functions have their own chips (four ASIC’s for 2D, four for 3D. Eight chips need to work in tandem JUST for visuals)
I think it was always destined to fail, even if it was cool in its own right
